Sézane review – new in pieces

A change of season is arriving and I thought it would be great to share some of my recent purchases from the French retailer, Sézane. I recently shared a Sézane haul and review video on my YouTube channel so I will link that video at the end of this blog post in case you’re interested in watching. This article was originally published on my old blog but I thought it might be useful to include it here too!

I made my first ever purchase from Sézane earlier in the year and was so impressed with their pieces that I have been keeping an eye out for some new items to add to my wardrobe. So today on the blog, I will share each of the pieces I’ve picked up and share details on the design, fabric and sizing. There’s a few items in this haul which I feel would work really well for women who have a minimalist sense of style or who adore the French or Parisian style aesthetic when it comes to clothing.

1. Chloé silk shirt

The Chloé silk shirt instantly caught my eye due to its feminine design and versatility. As part of Sézane’s “essentials” range, this shirt features a pretty ruffle along the collar and font placket. The ruffle is embroidered in a broderie anglaise design and adds a definite point of interest to an otherwise classic silk shirt.

The main material is 100% silk and the ruffle embroidery is made from polyester. It feels very light and soft against the skin. However a downside with this shirt is that it’s quite sheer. I would recommend adding a camisole underneath, if you’re thinking of wearing this to the office. The Chloé silk shirt comes is a range of colours from vibrant jewel tones in silk to additional options in cotton.

I feel this shirt is true to size – I purchased a size 34 and it sits at just the right spot on my shoulders. The arms are slightly long but I find this to be common with most shirts I purchase and that might be because I’m quite petite. In terms of styling, I feel this shirt is a wonderful option due to its versatility. It’s the kind of shirt which would work wonderfully worn with a suit or pencil skirt to work and it would also pair wonderfully with denim for the weekend.

2. Gatsby stripe top

A quintessential French or Parisian style, this marinière has been on my Sézane wish-list for months. I originally wanted the navy and ecru (cream) colourway… as that was sold out online (although it’s now back in stock) I decided to try the ecru and bordeaux (red) colourway, for something a bit different.

This is another piece which is part of Sézane’s “essentials” range. A point of difference is the lovely tortoiseshell buttons down the front placket. This affords versatility for styling as the top may be worn open or conversely you could wear it buttoned up which will showcase the elegant boat neckline.

Made from 100% organic cotton, the fabric feels nice and has a bit of weight to it. This is a piece which due to the long sleeves and feel of the fabric, would be great for the transitional seasons of autumn/fall or spring.

The fit is quite relaxed and boxy, so if you prefer classic or slim fitting clothing, then I’d recommend you size down in this piece. I purchased mine in the XS sizing (as the XXS was sold out online) and will need to return the XS as it’s simply far to boxy/relaxed for my personal style preference. Sizing aside, the Gatsby stripe top is an elegant and striking piece – comfortable and with that attractive French flair, it’s an item which would fit seamlessly into a work or weekend wardrobe.

3. Giulia jumper

My favourite piece from this Sézane haul, the Giulia jumper is so feminine and soft that I wish it was available in more colourways! Another piece I’ve been looking at for months, I was disappointed when it sold out earlier this year – yet happily surprised when I noticed that Sézane restocked it recently. There’s so many things to love about this sweet knit and I know it’s going to be a piece on high rotation for me for a long time to come.

Featuring a round neckline, the Giulia jumper has a feminine knitted pattern along the front bodice and over the elbow length sleeves. The sleeves can be worn down to the elbows or slightly rolled up to create a semi “puff” sleeve effect. I purchased mine in the “frosted blue” colourway and was initially surprised when it arrived as the colour is darker in real life, compared to the photos online. Sézane also have this jumper in a lovely lilac colourway as well.

One of the main things I adore about this jumper is how soft and snuggly the fabric feels. It’s mainly a kid mohair fabrication yet it doesn’t feel itchy against the skin at all. I’ve had a few mohair knits over the years which have left my skin feeling sensitive or itchy so I was a bit nervous I would have the same experience with this jumper but thankfully that hasn’t occurred. The fabric composition is 48% super kid mohair, 36% acrylic, 9% polyamide and 7% polyester.

The sizing for the Giulia jumper for me was true to size. I purchased mine is the XS (which was the smallest size available) and it feels like a classic fit. It isn’t skin tight nor is it relaxed and another great point is that there is sufficient length if you wanted to tuck this into a skirt of pair of trousers. Simply a beautifully designed, soft as a cloud and feminine item of knitwear which I adore.

4. Chloé cotton shirt

The last piece in my latest Sézane haul and review is the same style as the Chloé white silk shirt, just in a different colourway and material. The main reason I decided to purchase this shirt was because of the way the white embroidery on the ruffle stands out against the chambray blue material. It’s a strikingly simple yet feminine detail which certainly catches the eye!

The fabric composition for this shirt is 62% lyocell, 26% cotton and 12% linen. The fabric feels heavier (although still breathable) compared to a cotton shirt and it retains its shape compared to the fluidity of the silk shirt version. I purchased this in a size 34 and would say it’s true to size. The material feels comfortable against the skin and I think this colourway would look lovely worn to the office or with the sleeves rolled up for a more casual styling twist on the weekend.

I’m not sure whether I will be keeping this option though as I’m not sure whether I can make this work in with my existing wardrobe as much as I’d like to. I prefer the white silk version of the Chloé shirt – partly because it’s a classic white colour and due to the silk composition. I feel the blue chambray cotton Chloé shirt is a lovely piece especially for autumn/fall. It would also look beautiful layered under a jumper or knit with the embroidered collar peeking out.

New clothing tops and shirts from sezane

I’m quite impressed with the quality and design of these pieces from Sézane. I feel I’ve been able to pick up some lovely essential pieces which will work in seamlessly with my existing wardrobe. These pieces also support my focus on investing more in neutrals and lovely fabrics.

I hope this review has been helpful, especially if you’re considering picking up some new pieces from Sézane! One point is that some items do sell out quite quickly online, so if you have your eye on something and it sells out, I’d recommend to create an “alert” via Sézane’s website, so that way if a piece is re-stocked (like the Giulia jumper) then you will receive an email letting you know it’s available again. Below are links to the items mentioned in today’s post and in the video.

I’ll link my latest Sézane haul and review YouTube video below in case you’d like to see the pieces up close and also see some of the outfit combinations I created. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments here on the blog. If you have any questions, feel free to post it here in the comments section and I will reply back to you.
